Welcome to the Croatian Biosafety Portal
The Ministry of Environmental and Nature Protection as the central state authority competent for nature protection is responsible for implementation of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and its supplementary Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety.
Significant legal obligation arising from Article 20 of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety is a requirement to exchange information on biosafety through the biosafety clearing-house mechanism (BCH).
The national biosafety portal includes the BCH mechanism but it has been designed with much broader purpose of offering biosafety information to policymakers, professionals, researchers, educators and wide general public and information on the implementation of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety and its most important issues.
This portal provides you with the information about biosafety at the national level (BCH) including updated information on national legislation relevant to biosafety and genetically modified organisms (GMOs), as well as information on global and national projects, workshops, courses and other biosafety activities that have been organized so far or will be planned in the near future. In addition, this portal offers possibility of getting updated information on the legislation of the European Union and other information on activities of some other international organizations and treaties that are involved in the field of biosafety, biotechnology and nature protection. Further, this portal is offering information on access to publications and reference material, and since it has an educational role, you can find some other useful information such as the glossary of biosafety relevant terms, frequently asked questions, links to relevant UN organizations, intergovernment and non-government organizations, scientific institutions, free-accessible journals, etc.
The objectives of the National biosafety portal are primarily to increase general understanding of the issues related to biosafety and genetically modified organisms (GMOs); to strengthen public awareness and encourage public participation in the decision-making procedures at the national level but also to continuously inform our professionals, experts and other interested stakeholders on the latest biosafety findings and developments. Ultimately, this portal facilitates better implementation of the provisions and decisions of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety at the national level while improving the exchange and flow of biosafety information among various stakeholders in the Republic of Croatia.
National biosafety portal has been revamped completely and it is the successor of the previous website established under the UNEP- GEF Project entitled “Development of the National Biosafety Framework for Republic of Croatia” which has been finalized in January 2005. All information in regards to this project could be still accessed under the link of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, issue of Capacity building, as the same name of the project.
In order to fully achieve the purpose of the National biosafety portal, we are inviting you to send us your comments and suggestions under the link "Contact Us".
