Biodiversity and Biosafety

Both biodiversity and biosafety are terms and concepts covered by the legally binding provisions under the Convention on Biological Diversity and its supplementary Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety.

The Ministry of Environmental and Nature Protection as the competent national authority to implement the Convention as well as the Protocol is responsible to take lead in activities related to nature protection and conservation of all components of biodiversity at one hand, and biosafety activities that are relevant to introduction of GMOs into the environment (e.g. plants and animals (fishes, insects, etc.) on the other hand.
